Atikokan EOC: VA3EOA

In March 2008, the AARC established an emergency radio station at the Atikokan Emergency Operations Centre located at the municipal office. The com centre has the callsign VA3EOA. (Locate on Findu.com.) It includes:

The first HF contact at VA3EOA was made on 9 March 2008 at 00:40 UTC between VE3FYN and VA3EXT in Dryden, on 80 metres.

The station was offline for much of 2009 as the municipality built a new Town Hall and demolished the old one. In June 2010, the station was recommissioned in the new building.

Late in 2009, the station was dismantled to make way for the construction of a new Town Hall. On 11 June 2010 the cables were finally pulled, and the tower readied for the antennas.

Here is the tower behind Town Hall, will all of its antennas.

The G5RV HF antenna will only be fully extended when in use. In this photo, it is run down the tower and fastened at the bottom.

The full antenna array is
shown at right.

Inside Town Hall, the station includes:

  • A computer setup with APRS and WinLink.
  • A GE-MVS radio linked to the computer for APRS, WinLink and local repeater access.
  • A Yaesu 857 HF/VHF/UHF radio.
  • An MFJ manual tuner.
  • Power supplies.
  • A 2000 watt UPS (the building has generator backup).
  • A complete user manual and logbook.
